Spring Cleaning

It's that time of year again where we open the windows to breathe in the fresh air and begin the grueling task of Spring Cleaning. I hate cleaning for a number of reason. First of all, I would rather be doing any number of things besides cleaning. Secondly, most harsh cleaners dry my hands out and sometimes cause cracks in the skin. Third, it's hard work! MyBlogSpark recently sent me a Seventh Generation "Disinfecting Cleaning Kit" courtesy of Seventh Generation. The kit included a disinfecting multi-surface cleaner, bathroom cleaner, wipes , a copy of The Conscious Kitchen, a cleaning caddy made from recycled plastic, and two rolls of 100% recycled, unbleached paper towels.

Seventh Generation’s environmentally friendly cleaning products have been around for the last 20 years. They have tapped into the disinfecting power of the herb thyme, to introduce an EPA registered line of disinfecting sprays and wipes that kill germs* naturally! The new line of botanical disinfectant cleaners includes a multi-surface cleaning spray, bathroom cleaning spray and wipes.

The disinfectants contain thymol, a component of the herb thyme, and can be used on hard surfaces including counter tops, plastic cutting boards, highchair trays as well as children’s toys. Best of all, they kill over 99.99 percent of germs* naturally and are effective against the Influenza A Virus, including H1N1.

Do you know how many chemical products are in the average American Home? There are a staggering 63 chemicals in the average family home according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The Conscious Kitchen by author Alexandra Zissu, discusses what’s good for your health, what’s good for the planet and what tastes great. Her book also includes great tips on maintaining a green and healthy kitchen, including:

~Choosing cleaning products without indoor air pollutants like volatile organic compounds, or VOCs
~Think before spraying harsh chemicals on your eating or food prep surfaces. Those chemicals can stick around longer than you think.
~Use an EPA registered disinfectant to be sure that your home is "clean".
~Only purchase sponges that do not contain antimicrobial pesticides.
~Recycle your old t-shirts or washcloths to use for cleaning rather than using paper towels.
~Wash your hands

Win a "Disinfecting Kit" for yourself simply by telling me how you keep your family safe from chemicals. Comment here on my blog or on my facebook page for a chance to win.
